Want to keep yourself safe from police? Evidence is increasingly pointing to one way that has good odds: Be white. So that’s what Tashala Dangel Geyer, a black woman from Daytona Beach, set out to do.
“Black lives matter, Chinese lives matter, but most important—white lives matter,” said Geyer as she painted herself white on Facebook live last night. She streamed video as she wore a blonde wig and coated her body, saying, “This is the best sh*t I ever thought of. This is saving my life.”
The performance was taken down briefly by Facebook (presumably because of Geyer’s nudity), but was posted again, and quickly reposted on other social media pages. “If you want to survive, I’ma keep saying it: Go white! You’ll live a long time!”
In a study conducted on mostly white, male police officers, participants were more likely to perceive black children as older and inherently guilty. “Researchers reviewed police officers’ personnel records to determine use of force while on duty and found that those who dehumanized blacks were more likely to have used force against a black child in custody than officers who did not dehumanize blacks.” Results of the Implicit Association Test bias against black people is stronger for men, white people, adults over 65, and those with conservative political views.
