A 36-year-old woman decided to cut off contact with her family after the death of her stepmother. Her story was subsequently posted on r/BestofRedditorUpdates three months ago. As a result, Reddit users are discussing grief and whether a terminal illness should affect a strained relationship. The woman, who had originally posted her story on r/AITAH, explained that the years during which she felt ignored by her family had affected her mental health. So, she had stopped talking to them, even though there was pressure on her to make amends.

The OP, u/MirrorMama, explained that her relationship with her stepmother had been characterized over the years by passive-aggression and constant reminders that she had been given preferential treatment over her younger half-brother. She also believed that her father always supported his wife rather than standing up for her when disagreements arose within the family, leaving her feeling isolated.

According to her account, the situation was especially painful after the birth of her daughter in January 2025. She had rules for visitors, especially regarding hygiene, since her half-brother has severe depression and neglects himself because of it. But her stepmother still requested that she make an exception and risk her baby's well-being. The woman was also hurt when her teenage half-sister, who wanted to attend the birth, canceled her plans at the last minute. After the OP let people know she was disappointed, she stopped seeing and talking to a large part of her family.

Though her father sometimes got in touch with her, he did not provide the kind of support she needed as a new mother recovering from childbirth. She also had to manage a disability and mental health issues. But after months of tenuous communication, she finally blocked both her father and her siblings. Her mental health reportedly improved after she stopped keeping in touch with them, and she felt more at peace when she was with just her husband and daughter.

Then the woman found out that her stepmother's cancer had worsened and that she was expected to live only a few more days. Her aunt told her to forget the past and visit her stepmother before it was too late. So, the OP admitted that she had been feeling conflicted, especially after briefly hearing her father's usual greeting during a phone call arranged by her aunt. His voice reminded her that she missed him, even though she was still deeply hurt by their relationship.

In an update posted on July 7, 2026, the OP said that her stepmother had died and that her uncle had informed her of the death. He also told her that he would respect her decision if she chose to avoid future contact. After discussing the nuances of the situation with her therapist, the woman finally decided to remain no-contact for the foreseeable future.

Most Reddit users agreed that the woman should look after her own well-being rather than attempt reconciliation with her family following her stepmother's death. A number of commenters said that grief does not erase past experiences and that missing a parent does not necessarily mean restarting the relationship would be healthy.

Another commenter said that the OP was actually grieving the supportive family relationship she had hoped to have. Therefore, the commenter said, it would not be wise to act on this emotional impulse.
