A video of North Carolina parents updating followers about their son’s homeschooling has gone viral. Former US Department of Energy employee Matt Van Swol, a North Carolina dad, has dropped an update about his child’s homeschooling.
The dad shared the update in a detailed video with his wife on his X account @mattvanswol. Three weeks in, he and his wife described the experience as 'life-changing,' saying even homeschooling advocates had undersold how positive it's been. First, they talked about the adjustment period during the first week.
His wife mentioned that it took some getting used to, especially because of the prep work. But she deemed it a truly fun experience that brought her and her son closer than before. She also listed key differences in their son, ‘Byron.’
The mom claimed he’s become more confident, calmer, and has become a good listener. Even academically, both parents noted a stark difference in the knowledge their son has gained in just three weeks.
She also told viewers that throughout the process of studying, they do take sufficient breaks, play games, color, and build towers together. Overall, it has been an enriching experience for them as a family.
Everyone who said homeschooling is amazing has MASSIVELY DOWNPLAYED how incredible it is.

It’s life changing.
My son is confident, learning more stuff in a DAY than he used to learn in a week at public school.
Here’s an update, now that we are 3 weeks in ❤️ pic.twitter.com/o8IXxBbiKd
Both parents also acknowledged the comments about them allegedly hating on public school. Swol clarified that they’re still “best friends” with both teachers at their son’s previous school and that teachers weren’t the problem; it was the learning.
They loved the idea of their son learning with his peers. But since he apparently wasn’t learning, they resorted to homeschooling. And it has been seemingly going well from what they described in the detailed update.
In the caption of his X post, the dad wrote, “Everyone who said homeschooling is amazing has massively downplayed how incredible it is…It’s life-changing.” The update was viewed nearly 50,000 times.
Their post drew appreciation, love, support, and some criticism from fellow X users in the comments. A user noted, “Sounds like you guys are off to an amazing journey!” Others resonated with homeschooling being a wholesome and ‘amazing’ experience.
The North Carolina Parents Shared the Update Three Weeks Later
The couple first announced pulling their son out of Public School because he was reportedly mocked for believing in God and supporting President Donald Trump, as previously reported by The Daily Dot.
Great video!! Great key points. It’s just a huge blessing to spend more time with your kids while they’re young. If you have the ability to do it.. do it ?❤️?

Before committing to homeschooling, the couple wrestled with their thoughts and decision. But eventually found peace in educating their son at home. According to the dad’s previous X post, his wife chose to sacrifice her career for the sake of homeschooling her son.
From everything the woman recently described, she didn’t seem to regret it despite the challenges. She enjoys spending even more time with their son while on this journey of homeschooling together.
