John Riding, a 76-year-old elderly man, suffered a heart attack after William Hill refused a Jackpot payout worth £285K, which he won. The elderly man was reportedly “absolutely destroyed” on hearing his victory was a mere glitch in the system.

In a conversation with The Mirror UK, Riding recalled learning that money was disappearing from his account. He’d made plans to move closer to his six grandchildren when he realized the dream could be no more.

The 76-year-old earned (and later lost) the fortune when playing the William Hill Vegas Casino game, Cherry Bonanza. Recollecting the moment he won, Riding said, “I was ecstatic, I couldn’t believe it…It felt like a dream.”

Shortly after winning, the elderly man even went to the William Hill establishment at his Burnley locality. He even celebrated with other customers gathered when he’d just won. And had planned a holiday for the rest of the family.

His ultimate intention, however, was to “take away money worries” for his entire family. A day after winning, the £285K had vanished from his account. There was apparently no formal notice from the casino establishment.

After losing the money, he said, “I was absolutely devastated. It was like my dreams had been shattered into pieces.” The message that followed is what ultimately triggered the heart attack.

The Heart Attack Trigger for The Elderly Man Who Lost £285K

Just 10 days after he’d heard the devastating news about losing the £285K, the aftermath was a heart attack. Riding was reportedly blue when he collapsed and was immediately rushed to a hospital for further treatment.

Although medical intervention was successful, he still feels "devastated" about losing the money.

The elderly man is apparently still at the hospital, recovering from the heartbreaking loss of money and the dreams he aimed to accomplish.

His son, Adam Riding, spoke to the publication in the aftermath of his father’s heart attack. Adam claimed, “The shock of that has been unbearable. It’s not just about money, it’s the way it’s been handled.”

Riding’s son thought the ordeal was an act of “injustice” against his father and pointed out that losing all that money was unbearable stress. Much like his father, many individuals have won money but soon lost it.

There continues to be growing criticism about William Hill, with many reporting similar glitches. Critics have shared their accounts of heartbreak on social media. The most recent controversy, however, happened when a mother of two found herself in a similar situation.

During an appearance with Good Morning Britain, the single mother of two children, Claire Ainsley, recalled her situation, similar to that ofthe 76-year-old man. She had won £1 million when playing another game from the William Hill.

Her life was turned upside down when she learned that her victory was due to a technical glitch. So, is this a pattern among high-prize-money winners, or is it genuinely a glitch?

Here’s what representatives of William Hill had to say. This is in the aftermath of Riding’s heart attack.

William Hill Spokesperson Responds to The Elderly Man Who Lost £285K

A spokesperson for Evoke, a company that owns William Hill, responded in the wake of Riding’s heart attack. Firstly, the spokesperson apologized about Riding’s health and wished him a “speedy recovery.”

Then dived into the reportedly technical glitch. The individual claimed that the glitch in the Jackpot Drop game was identified during a “routine review of performance activity.” This glitch led to “incorrect sums” being credited to a player’s account.

As of now, those who’ve experienced this glitch have been contacted. The representative concluded the statement by thanking customers of William Hill for their patience in the matter.
