If you're a frequent flier, you know all too well about the unanticipated seat swap request. But one man's situation took that familiar frustration to a level no one saw coming.

A 30-year-old man wrote a story titled "What would you have done?" on the Delta subreddit this week, which has gone viral. According to the post, he paid extra to get an aisle seat, especially because of his size. When he settled in, he noticed a tiny boy, believed to be five to eight years old, seated in the middle seat next to him.

He was first relieved, as a child means no armrest battle. Small win, sure. But then came the tap on the shoulder.

Seated in another middle seat a few rows back, the boy's mother asked him to move to her own seat so she could sit next to her kid. Given that he had paid more for his place, it was reasonable for him to politely decline. However, what happened next was every traveller's nightmare.

Stuck with that boy on a four-hour Delta flight, the man had to keep him company. And his mom wouldn't stop asking for little favors.

"I basically ended up having to babysit the kid for four straight hours," the man wrote, adding, "endlessly begging me to play games with him on the screen and constantly begging for more snacks, food, etc., and then he just slept on my shoulder the last 60-90 minutes." He added, "We got that boy four rounds of snacks and played every single game on the screen."

He never voiced his complaints out loud. He just accepted the situation and tried to make the most of it, despite the fact that it made his flight "horrible." At the end of the trip, the mother thanked him.

The man's patience quickly won over commenters. "Thank you for being kind to the boy," someone commented. "You are a good man. As a parent, I appreciate how you handled it. It's easy to judge the mom, but you never know the circumstances." A third merely commended him for being "a good sport."

The U.S. Department of Transportation has advised all airlines to ensure that small children are seated adjacent to accompanying adults at no additional cost, according to Upworthy. However, only roughly half of the major U.S. carriers now provide this kind of assurance.

Delta is one of the companies that still makes young children sit away from their parents, even though DOT has suggested making this policy legally binding with sanctions for noncompliance. However, Congress still needs to approve that proposal.

Until then, strangers continue to bear the burden of bridging the gap between common decency and policy.
