It’s Ash Wednesday, and the Catholic memes proliferating on Twitter prove that nothing is sacred. The jokes celebrate the centuries-old tradition and highlight some relatable Catholic experiences.

If your knowledge of Catholicism is limited to what you picked up from Lady Bird, here’s a quick primer on the yearly tradition: Ash Wednesday is a holy day of prayer and fasting. A priest will place ashes in the shape of a cross on the forehead of those observing the holy day while saying, "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."
Ash Wednesday also marks the beginning of Lent, during which practicing Catholics give up one luxury of their choosing until Easter.
Hopefully, you didn't give up memes for Lent, so you can laugh at these without any Catholic guilt.
