Kane Kliewer, 28, is transmasc—and he grew up attending an evangelical Baptist church and a private Christian school.

Kane’ mother is in Moms for Liberty, a conservative, anti-LGBTQ+ group that crusades against what it considers woke content. It’s suddenly one of the most influential forces in U.S. schools.

Moms for Liberty has been deemed an anti-government extremist group. “I am trans and she is a Moms for Liberty type of person,” Kane says.

While Kliewer says his mother may never accept him, there’s still space in his heart for her. “It’s complicated the kind of love you have for somebody,” he said.
