The Campeones Cup is a relatively new tradition in Concacaf club soccer. Now in its second year, the Campeones Cup brings the reigning MLS Cup champion into a one-match battle with Liga MX’s winner of the Campeones de Campeones match between the past season’s Apertura winners and Clausura winners. It’s another partnership between Liga MX and MLS to get their teams competing on the field, and so far, it’s tipped Liga MX’s way.

In last year’s first-ever Campeones Cup, Tigres defeated Toronto FC 3-1 to continue their recent run of trophies. Tigres, however, missed out to Club América in this year’s Campeones de Campeones battle. Las Águilas now get to travel to Atlanta to face an Atlanta United that has undergone some major changes yet now seems to be hitting its stride.

Atlanta United vs. Club América: Why it matters

Club América’s off to a solid start in the Apertura; the Aguilas haven’t lost in their opening four matches, and new arrival Giovani dos Santos is starting to make his impact felt. In addition to the current season’s early success, they’ve advanced to the semis of the Leagues Cup competition by besting the Houston Dynamo last month in a match where dos Santos scored the decisive penalty kick.

It may be a little tougher going in Atlanta. While swapping out team catalyst Miguel Almiron and coach Tata Martino for Pity Martinez and Frank de Boer has been a tough transition, they’re finding good form at the right time. Josef Martinez has heated up his goal-scoring of late to mount a defense of his Golden Boot—he now has 20 on the season compared to Carlos Vela’s 23. They’re also on to the U.S. Open Cup finals, hosting Minnesota United in the title match next month. Can they score an elusive MLS vs. Liga MX trophy first? It’d be a boon for both the league and one of its newly emergent flagship teams.
