Hulu continues its adaptation streak by grabbing a cult classic: 1979 drama The Warriors.
According to Deadline, the film is being adapted for Paramount TV and Hulu as an drama series. Even more intriguing, Marvel darlings the Russo brothers (Captain America sequels Winter Soldier, Civil War) are set to helm the adaptation.
There is already dissent online as to whether the Russo brothers are “ruining” a classic by bringing the story of a city-wide gang war in New York City to the 21st century. Though, of course, the film was already an adaptation of a 1965 book. When it was released in 1979, there were reportedly incidents of gang-related violence and murder surrounding its debut. Watching the movie now, however, the on-screen violence is tame compared to what’s presented to us online every day.
In 2014, director Walter Hill told Esquire the film “was meant to be a dystopian tale about the near future,” so it will be interesting to see how it’s tweaked by entities so involved in the Marvel universe. A release date has not been set yet or a director tapped, but the Russos are probably pretty busy with those upcoming Avengers: Infinity War films, too.
