After winning the Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in This Is Us, Sterling Brown took to the podium to deliver his acceptance speech. It was a powerful moment, as Brown became the first Black man to win an Emmy for best actor since 1998.
However, he wasn’t given the time he needed to get all his words out, getting played off during his speech. He tried to joke through the music at first, but couldn’t. Backstage, Brown was asked if he wanted to finish, and he delivered.
Brown went on to thank the show’s writers, producers and directors, and his manager. But most importantly, Brown finally got a chance to publicly thank his wife and kids.
“And to my wife—they cut me off before I got to thank my wife, man! Ryan Michelle Bathe, you’re everything. You make my life worth living and you gave me two of the most beautiful things that God has ever put on this planet: my sons. Andrew Jason Sterling Brown, Amari Michael Christian Brown, your daddy loves you with the strength of 1,000 suns. I’ll see you Monday after work. Thank you.”
