New on Hulu May 2019: Catch-22

From classic comedies to original series, Hulu welcomes plenty of great titles in May. Holiday-based anthology horror series Into the Dark mines fractured familial relationships for its Mother’s Day episode, All That We Destroy. Hulu original series Catch-22, based on Joseph Heller’s classic satirical novel, centers on U.S. Air Force bombardier John Yossarian, who tries to keep his sanity as he performs his military duties. And following the premiere of its series finale in March, Broad City‘s fifth and final season will hit Hulu at the end of May.

What’s new on Hulu in May 2019: Editor’s picks

Shrill

Hulu’s new six-episode series is loosely based on Lindy West’s 2016 essay collection Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman; West is also co-writer and executive producer. Aidy Bryant plays Annie Easton, a calendar editor at the Portland-based Weekly Thorn and a chronic people-pleaser. Annie finds empowerment in her writing, and a viral piece titled “Hello, I’m Fat” earns positive responses, but also plenty of online trolls. Shrill feels a little too short to be conclusive, but it’s a smart show and a step in the right direction for better onscreen representation for women of all sizes. —Audra Schroeder

PEN15

They say fashion trends run on a 20-year cycle, which means we’re perilously close to seeing a full-scale revival of frosted lip gloss, bedazzled bootcut jeans, and tattoo choker necklaces. Consider Hulu’s new middle school cringe comedy, PEN15, a bold first step in that direction. Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle star as 13-year-old versions of themselves in the year 2000, as the two BFFs navigate the trials and tribulations of seventh grade. Erskine and Konkle deliver captivating, immersive performances, but it’s the strong supporting cast—featuring the full breadth of middle school archetypes—that lends the show its crucial emotional center. PEN15 constantly alternates between hilarious, heartbreaking, triumphant, and cringeworthy—just like seventh grade. —Bryan Rolli

Fyre Fraud

“We’re living in an era in which you can convince millions of people to do anything,” says one interviewee in Fyre Fraud. Hulu’s Fyre Fest doc takes a detour into the psychology of the con artist, which has evolved in the age of the Instascam. It also looks more critically at Jerry Media’s role in promoting the festival, and interviews former designer Oren Aks, who says the goal was to “stop the internet” with its content. Jerry Media co-produced Netflix’s own Fyre doc, and while Fyre Fraud never directly calls out Netflix, it lets the conflict of interest speak for itself, after underscoring Jerry Media’s role in the disaster. Proper event planning can actually pull off a win. Now how many people did Hulu convince to watch? —A.S.
