Here at the Daily Dot, we swap GIF images with each other every morning. Now we’re looping you in. In the Morning GIF, we feature a popular—or just plain cool—GIF we found on Reddit, Canvas, or elsewhere on the Internet.
Playmobil. Surf. Movie.
Now that we have your attention, we’ll explain. Karim Rejeb is a Dutch-born surfing instructor on the French Riviera, world traveller, painter, and award-winning creator of possibly the most blissfully relaxing film genre ever created: Playmobil surf movies.
The genre includes Rejeb’s breakthrough, Lino, with 366,453 views on YouTube, and the more primitive My Toys, featuring a multi-sport extremist using every combination of board to criss-cross the house. It reaches its apex, however, with the sublime short Perfect Holiday, which depicts a group of intrepid Playmobils (Playmobilers? Playmobilii?) in their happy little camper van, trundling through brush and over dune to get to that one secret spot for a bitchin’ day of barrels. That those waves are made of paper, vinyl, cotton, and what appears to be toilet paper, does not phase our brave band of bitty bros. They shoot the curl. They get air. They hang … two. It’s off the Richter, totally gnarlacious, and completely adorable.
This GIF comes to us via the Totes Your Mate Tumblr and is similar to Bruce Brown’s iconic Endless Summer shot of Robert August and Mike Hynson standing onshore, gazing at the endlessly repeating, perfect curl, lit by a setting sun. Here, the gang chills by the van, watching their bro give that wave a good shredding.
We’re stoked.
