Start your week right with the Daily Dot’s Monday Mashup: the best music remix from around the Web. Turn up your speakers or pop on your headphones, and bring the funk.
The Monkees were one of those bands you weren’t supposed to like. A studio-created quadra-headed golem, the group was supposed to consist of cute puppets who would meekly sing whatever they were told by studio musicians, and to act generally appealing on television. Instead, Hollywood got a truly independent and talented group of performers (okay, so Davy couldn’t dance, so what?).
Mike Nesmith wrote several hits for the band and went on to virtually invent the music video and father MTV. Peter Tork taught Eastern music in prep schools before becoming a paparazzo satirist of celebrity culture. And the album Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones is considered one of the greats of the 60s.
Then along came Strongbad.
Strongbad is the Mexican wrestling masked-figure at the heart of the web comic Homestar Runner. He’s a bit of a jerk, a bit of a dope, a bit of a troll, but really not a bad guy overall. He loves answering (real) email from fans, and thus begins most episodes of the show.
Now DJ Davyjones (no relation to the actual Davy Jones, of course) has put the two together to create “The System is Zilch,” which mixes the Monkee’s “Zilch” and Strongbad’s “The System is Down.” How good is it? It’s dubstep you can actually listen to, that’s how good it is.
The song comes to us from the 28-song “Monkee Mash” album, combining the boys with everyone from the Beatles to…Strongbad. It’s available for download on MediaFire as a whole, or you can select “Monkee Soul,” ie just the Beatles tunes, or just the “Head Mashers,” ie songs from Headquarters album, or non-Headquarters songs.
Play this a few times in a row and you’ll have people coming over telling you to knock it off with the beatboxing for hours.
