The Kansas Jayhawks lost to Oregon in the Elite Eight round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament on Saturday, meaning coach Bill Self’s team has now lost five national quarterfinals games during his 13-year tenure, including two in a row when the Jayhawks were a No. 1 seed.
All of which allowed the Lawrence, Kansas Police Department one heck of an opportunity to burn the hell out of the underachieving squad. And the police department’s Twitter account responded by dunking all over the Jayhawks.
Well, at least we have a lot of experience dealing with fans after an #Elite8 loss. Get home safely Jayhawk fans. #DriveSober

The police department even created its own #GrieveSafely hashtag.
Only 1 disturbance reported so far. Pretty somber mood downtown. No streakers. #GrieveSafely #DriveSober

Officers arrived on a disturbance downtown before it could escalate. Guys, we’re all sad but the cops downtown didn’t disappear. Stay classy

Reading our @ mentions while still thinking about the game. No new disturbances to report. Alls quiet downtown. pic.twitter.com/iPViJdTVPs

Still no issues to report downtown. kstate, mizzou and wich st fans @’ing us about “choking” in the elite 8. Your trolling is subpar.

Also we’re a police department, not a basketball team

Unfortunately for the people of Lawrence, it seems the police are a long way from these kinds of harmonious moment.
KU fans and Lawrence PD on Saturday night after duck hunting gonna be in sync on Mass St. like… #CelebrateSafely pic.twitter.com/VLGdDnRweV

Seemingly, the only major issue for the officers was an attempted arboricide that was aborted at the last moment.
An intoxicated guy tried to pull a tree out of the ground. His friend carried him off before he could succeed. It’s not the trees fault man

This, of course, is the sign of a police department that has its priorities straight – keeping a mourning city safe and in hysterics at the same time.
