John Early and Kate Berlant have spent the last couple years appearing on comedy projects like Portlandia and Netflix’s The Characters, and now they’re finally getting a shot at their own show.
Hulu announced Tuesday evening that it has ordered a pilot presentation from the pair for a half-hour comedy called This Is Heaven. Also signed onto the project are executive producer John Levenstein (Arrested Development, Silicon Valley) and director Lorene Scafaria (New Girl, The Meddler)—so it’s not like they’ll be taping this pilot in a basement with no budget. Production company A24 (Room, Ex Machina, Moonlight) will distribute.
Few details about the show are available yet, but according to Deadline, it will be about “best friends Roger and Eva,” and draw on the dynamic Berlant and Early have “developed through their numerous collaborations.”
Berlant and Early released a statement along with the news, and said they are going to refrain from posting about the pilot on social media out of superstition. “We have been dreaming about making this show since the day we met, and we couldn’t be more eager to share it with the world. It’s an honor and a privilege to be in the trades today. Though we will not tweet the link due to superstition, those who fail to widely circulate the announcement will be punished to the full extent of the law. We hope to see you soon!”
It’s been a busy year for the pair: Berlant and Early co-created and starred in the short-form comedy series 555 back in January, and Early was most recently seen in Search Party and Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later, while Berlant has appeared in High Maintenance and Transparent.
