The Handmaid’s Tale, adapted from Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel, stars Elisabeth Moss as Offred, a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead where women are mostly valued for their reproductive abilities and are no longer allowed to do things like read. The 30-second teaser shows a bit of Moss’s character in her former life—as well as her life as Offred. We also get a glimpse at Samira Wiley’s character Moira and Alexis Bledel’s Ofglen.
The book’s exploration of the subjugation of women and their power has remained relevant since its publication, are there are still parallels to be drawn. In a 1986 interview with the New York Times, Atwood said:
I delayed writing it for about three years after I got the idea because I felt it was too crazy. Then two things happened. I started noticing that a lot of the things I thought I was more or less making up were now happening, and indeed more of them have happened since the publication of the book.
The series debuts April 26.
