“Why did the toasted marshmallow taste like fish?”
That’s just one of the many, many questions New York Times restaurant critic Pete Wells posed in his review of celebrity TV host Guy Fieri’s new restaurant this week.
It’s also one of the first messages posted by a Twitter account paying homage to the takedown of Guy’s American Kitchen & Bar in Times Square. The review went viral and is the most popular story on the NYT’s website at the time of writing.
Wells’s brutal spiel was addressed to Fieri and written entirely almost in questions, such as “Why has the hearty, rustic appeal of roasted-garlic mayonnaise been replaced by something that tastes like Miracle Whip with minced raw garlic?”
Since 2am ET Thursday, @RandomPeteWells has spit out one line from the review on the hour, every hour (except for noon, curiously). The owner of the account, spotted by Dave Holmes, claims to have no affiliation with Wells or the newspaper and is simply an homage to the biting criticism.
Fieri hasn’t tweeted since the review was published. However, he made an appearance on the Today show Thursday and accused Wells of “having an agenda.”
Meanwhile, Marilyn Hagerty, who gained fame earlier this year for her overwhelmingly positive review of an Olive Garden in her hometown, called the review “very interesting.”
“I wonder why a person would write a completely negative review,” she wrote. “I don’t know what is the point. I guess there are many ways of thinking!”
