On what would have been Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell’s 53rd birthday, Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington committed suicide.
Brian Elias, chief of operations for the office of the medical examiner-coroner, confirmed that the 41-year-old hanged himself from a bedroom door in his private Los Angeles County residence Thursday morning. Bennington seems to have mirrored his friend Cornell, who hanged himself in May.
Two months ago, Bennington posted a heartfelt message on Twitter after Cornell’s death. The singer said he wept with sadness, and believed his friend told him goodbye in a dream before his death.
With all of my love @chriscornell. pic.twitter.com/NFz0dnxfp8

The tragic death of both rockers has fans resurfacing a YouTube video from nine years ago of the two performing together. Cornell opened for Linkin Park’s Projekt Revolution tour in 2008 while promoting his solo album Carry On. During the tour Cornell would join Linkin Park’s set to perform “Crawling,” from breakout Linkin Park album Hybrid Theory.
Bennington would also join Cornell onstage when the duo would perform Temple of the Dogs’ “Hunger Strike.”
Bennington went on to sing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” at Cornell’s funeral this year.
No, you’re crying.
