Former Disney Channel star Bella Thorne is giving Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz era a run for its money with two new singles this week.
The 20-year-old actor-slash-singer-slash-Instagram user‘s music career to date has been fairly squeaky clean—with song titles like “Fashion is My Kryptonite” and lyrics like “I wish I could stand on a star”—but these two new songs are aiming to change all that. The first single, “GOAT,” is a laid-back stoner rap about spotting an attractive girl from across the club and wondering if she’ll get with you. Thorne has been open about her bisexuality for years, but releasing a queer single certainly sets her apart from other former Disney recording artists like Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato.
The real fire comes from Thorne’s second single out today, though, titled “B*TCH I’M BELLA THORNE.” As the caps lock and asterisk insinuate, she has some choice words for her haters. Thorne’s Wiki-official job titles may be actor and singer, but at this point in her career she’s more in the Chrissy Teigen vein of famous—she mostly gets press coverage for her social media comments and how much boob she shows at Coachella. As a young woman coming into her professional prime in a post-Kim Kardashian, post-#MeToo era, Thorne seems hellbent on taking her famous-for-being-famous career meme and running with it.
“I don’t need an ID ’cause I’m Bella Thorne,” she raps in the song’s first verse. “Seen me on TV a million times before (times before) / Been inside the club since I was hella short (hella short) / Now my money talk sh*t since you can’t afford (can’t afford). / I don’t got a license but I got a Porsche (got a Porsche) / Yeah, I got some drivers they open my door (up in my door) / P*ssy scuba diving, need a surfboard / Let me show my nipples, what I need a shirt for?”
This career pivot feels a little like the midway point between Kylie Jenner and Lil Tay.
