The early aughts revival is in full swing, and with it comes a wonderful fact about the Backstreet Boys.
The boy band’s debut album is now 20 years old, and during Billboard‘s oral history with the group, one amazing story about the recording of “The Call,” a song from their 2000 album, slipped out. According to AJ McLean, fellow BSB Howie Dorough’s fart made it onto the track:
“So when we were in the studio with Max making the song ‘The Call,’ Howie [Dorough] was in the booth and we were doing that vocal break down, [sings] ‘dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun.’ Max gave Howie his harmony, and I think he was just putting so much air into the vocal that as he was singing, he went ‘dun, dun’ and he farted—but he farted not only on the beat, but in key. So Max tweaked it and made it sound like one of his patented bass sounds, and it stayed on the record.”
How one manages to fart on key is still a mystery, but Dorough justified the fart by saying everyone was gassy back in the day. He might even be farting in the video.
Well, that’s one way to get people to listen to that song again.
