It’s not a trick: Alex Tanney might play professionally for the Buffalo Bills.
One of the original “Trick Shot Quarterback” YouTube stars to go viral, Tanney accepted an offer to attend Buffalo’s minicamp this Friday instead of working out with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He faces incredibly long odds—his alma mater, D-III Monmouth College, hasn’t had any players play in the NFL since 1937. Though he had a statistically stellar college career, Tanney never faced the kind of competition that would make scouts take notice.
“I’ve had a chip on my shoulder basically throughout high school, college, coming from small schools and wanting to prove to people what I have,” he told Sports Illustrated.
It probably helped his name recognition that his video—in which he displays amazing accuracy, throwing a football to knock targets of a companion’s head and landing another in the bed of a moving truck from inside a house—has more than two million views.
Tanney’s video was in response to “Johnny Mac Trick Shot Quarterback,” believed to be the first viral football trick-shot video.
Though Johnny Mac—McEntee in real life—had the more successful video (6.7 million views), he’s currently competing to keep his job as the starting quarterback for the University of Connecticut.
