At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, fans of popular ’90s anime Yu-Gi-Oh! were treated to a teaser for the 2016 film Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions.
Now, we’re getting our first real look at the film, thanks to a new trailer released Friday in Japan.
Next year is the 20th anniversary of the popular anime franchise, which ran on Cartoon Network in the U.S. The film promises to revive everything fans loved about the original series, including its surprisingly moody themes.
Set six months after the ending of the original series, Dark Side of Dimensions finds Yugi and his friends facing a new threat in the form of a mysterious boy. The millennium puzzle is still around, as is the favored card game Duel Monsters. Here’s the summary from Shonen Jump:
In the past Y?gi Yami and Kaiba have clashed many times!! Yami Y?gi, who resides in Y?gi Mut?’s body, and Kaiba will have a duel that bets their prides and accepts each other’s mutual experience.
As predicted from the SDCC teaser, Kaiba is a major part of the film, and it looks like we’ll see him battling his demons along with some new monsters who’ll be featured on new Yu-Gi-Oh cards.
Fans can pre-order tickets to Dark Side of Dimensions beginning Saturday. Anyone who pre-orders will receive one of the special edition cards, a “Blue Eyes White Dragon” card limited to 200,000 copies. The card is one of a series of special-edition cards which will be released to fans throughout 2016, according to Anime News Network.
The film opens on April 23 in Japan, and will be headed to the U.S. later in the year.
