In this post-Thor: Ragnarok world, we can all agree that everything Taika Waititi touches turns to gold. That includes his 2014 vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows (co-directed with Jemaine Clement), which is getting a TV spinoff this year.
Titled Wellington Paranormal, the TV show stars Karen and Mike, a pair of New Zealand cops who appeared in the movie. It’s a police procedural comedy, described by Waititi as an “unflinching documentary” about a supernatural task force in New Zealand’s capital city. Rather than being vampire-centric, the trailer suggests a more general supernatural horror parody.
For What We Do in the Shadows fans who miss the vampire-specific humor of the original, there’s actually another spinoff in the works. FX is making an American TV version with a new ensemble cast, due out next year. Oh, and Waititi and his What We do in the Shadows co-creator Jemaine Clement are planning a sequel movie called We’re Wolves. As you can probably deduce, it’s about werewolves.
As for Wellington Paranormal, New Zealanders get to watch its six-episode first season beginning next week, although everyone else will have to wait until it shows up on a streaming service like Netflix. Given the popularity of Waititi’s other work, you may not have to wait very long.
