The amount of Twitter users in the U.K. has hit the 10-million mark. That means roughly one in six Brits are now signed up for the microblogging service.
On a global level, the site has reached 140 million users in total. If Twitter was a country, it would be the tenth largest, right behind Bangladesh and in front of Japan.
But in the U.K., Twitter has made particular gains in popularity, and some times for all the wrong reasons.
The U.K. is fourth in the number of Twitter accounts by country, but the service has come under scrutiny recently, following a series of sports-related controversies involving racists tweets, death threats, and jail time.
Twitter has also been cited as a major factor in the 2011 London Riots, although that claim has since been refuted.
But the fact that the number of Twitter users now outnumbers the amount of people who buy daily national newspapers shows that the network will not lose popularity anytime soon with the public.
That’s is especially true after considering that U.K. users tweet much more on the go than the average user. Around 80 percent of all tweets are sent using mobile devices, compared to the global average of 55 percent.
