As they hang out isolation, celebrities are getting more and more personal on social media. The most recent star to get candid on Twitter is Troye Sivan. In a 5-minute video, a shirtless Sivan told the story about the time he got catfished… Well, at least his manager did.
“‘Basically a couple of months ago Danny, who is my manager, reaches out to me. And she goes, ‘T, my dude, I have the sickest opportunity of our entire careers. You’ll never guess who I had a phone call with today.’”
His manager explained that she was on the phone with Greta Thunberg’s dad. Yes, that Greta Thunberg, the 17-year-old climate activist on a mission to save the world.
Thunberg’s supposed dad said they were working on a project called “Stars Save the Earth.”
Sivan, admittedly, wasn’t a fan of the name and suggested it needed some workshopping. But ultimately, he was in. He says “Greta” had a to-do list that included swimming with sharks with Leonardo DiCaprio and saving animals in Africa with Prince Harry.
After his agent passed along the contact info, Sivan messaged “Greta” on WhatsApp.
Something didn’t sit right with Danny, so she talked to her boyfriend who is Swedish and told him that “Greta’s dad” had a bad English accent. Then, the two looked up some videos of Greta’s dad, and she realized: They got catfished.
“Danny texts me and says: ‘T, I don’t know how to tell you this. But I think we got catfished by a fake Greta Thunberg,’” Sivan says in the video. “‘Now I died laughing. To me, this was the most hysterical thing. That is the best plan ever. Whoever thought of that is absolutely genius.”
Apparently, the catfishers people tricked some high-profile people including Prince Harry himself. “Prince Harry got completely, completely pranked by the same people,” Sivan said. “Turns out it’s these Russian hackers that did this elaborate scheme. They got Bernie Sanders, they got Prince Harry. They almost got me.”
At least Sivan can laugh about it now—and stay excited for his upcoming single “Take Yourself Home,” set to debut April 1.
