The Halo: Nightfall series might be the reason you’re thinking about buying Halo: The Master Chief Collection next month.

Halo: Nightfall is a digital television series executive produced by Ridley Scott (AlienBlack Hawk Down), directed by Sergio Mimica-Gezza, (Battlestar GalacticaFalling Skies), and written by Paul Scheuring, the creator of Prison Break.

The official trailer reveals a storyline about a substance that exclusively kills humans. The Office of Naval Intelligence thinks the substance can be seized and retooled to humanity’s advantage in winning the genocidal war against the religious, alien Covenant. And, of course, things will go poorly, or else where wouldn’t be much of a series to watch, would there?

One of the characters in Nightfall will be a former Spartan, the biologically and mechanically enhanced super soldiers who drive the narrative in most Halo games. We’ve seen plenty of actual Spartans in Halo games, comic books, and novels, but we haven’t seen many washouts from the Spartan program, and certainly never seen one in any of the Halo live-action projects released to date.

Halo: Nightfall is a part of a huge selection of content being released as part of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, an Xbox One exclusive, on Nov. 11. The collection also includes Halo 1-4, with Halo 2 featuring its first visual remaster since the original release in 2004. The Master Chief Collection is also bringing back the multiplayer mode from Halo 2, which arguably led to the success of Microsoft’s Xbox Live service.
