Deadpool director Tim Miller is no longer directing Deadpool 2 after he left over what was called “creative differences” with star Ryan Reynolds, but a new report suggests that those differences might have also been financial.
According to TheWrap, both Miller and Reynolds had different ideas on how to tackle a Deadpool sequel, which was in the works even as the first film was being made (and before a sequel was officially greenlit).
They came to the table with their own versions when talks initially began. Reynolds, joined by screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, wanted to make a movie with a similar tone and feel to the first movie. Deadpool, beloved for its raunchiness and fourth wall-breaking humor, made more than $780 million worldwide on a $58 million budget. Miller wanted to make a more “stylish” movie to compete with other superhero film, but it would’ve been much more expensive to make.
Reynolds’ version won out.
“There were two totally different movies on the table, and one of them just wasn’t Deadpool,” someone familiar with both concepts told the Wrap.
After Miller left Deadpool 2, he immediately signed on to another project at Fox, directing a film adaptation of Influx.
