The cast of Star Trek Discovery kneels in protest

Much of the NFL knelt and linked arms in response to Donald Trump’s comments calling NFL players who disrespected the American flag “son[s] of a bitch” who should be fired, but the movement originally started by Colin Kaepernick to protest police brutality is spreading beyond football stadiums. Stevie Wonder kneeled during a concert over the weekend, and the cast of Star Trek: Discovery showed their solidarity by taking a knee after their show took flight.

Star Sonequa Martin-Green shared a photo of herself with some of her castmates—including Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Rapp, Akiva Goldsman, and Shazad Latif—taking a knee after Discovery’s series premiere. She kept the caption simple with the hashtags #StarTrekDiscovery and #takeaknee.

Although he wasn’t present for the photo, Martin-Green’s Star Trek: Discovery co-star Jason Isaacs expressed earlier Sunday that he’d take a knee “in the spirit of Gene Roddenbery” if he could.

Star Trek has a long legacy of addressing social and political issues through the lens of its inclusive crew, and Discovery—which already faced criticism for casting a Black woman in a leading role—will be no different. But now the crew of the Discovery are doing it both on and off the ship.
