The Smash Bros. franchise, meanwhile—which exploded into the gaming world in 1999— now sits at 14 million units sold in the US alone.

Smash Bros. fans are nothing if not a loyal bunch.

The news is positive, but also a confirmation of Nintendo’s expectations.  On Nov. 11, the company’s president announced that pre-orders for the fighter’s latest iteration had set a new record for the young console. The company also expects sales of the game to increase dramatically with Black Friday and holiday shopping just around the corner.

Furthermore, Nintendo expects the title to have a positive impact on console sales. “Consumers buy the hardware so they can play the software,” Fils-Aime told Bloomberg. “When you have a robust library of games, that’s when consumers jump in.”

While still low on the all-time list of best sellers, the pace remains good news for Smash esports fans hoping to see a surge in participation from a new generation of players. With even Amiibos entering Smash tournaments these days, it’s safe to say that their expectations are well placed.
