Sex Criminals is being adapted for TV by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Matt Fraction, to which we can unequivocally say, “OMG, this is awesome.”

The Image Comics series is a modern fantasy comedy about a librarian and an actor who can freeze time when they orgasm. Naturally, they decide to use this power to rob banks. Created by Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, Sex Criminals has received excellent reviews since its 2013 debut, and it gained a cult following because, well, it’s a comic about people who stop time when they orgasm. That’s just a killer concept, and we can’t wait to see how they translate it into a TV show.

This announcement is what many comics fans have been hoping would happen for years. We’ve recently seen a rush for TV shows about superheroes like Batman and The Flash, but there has been precious little from sources that can’t be shoehorned into the format of superhero origin stories or episodic crime TV. Sex Criminals is a great choice because its premise is so easy to explain, and getting Fraction and DeConnick to adapt it is ideal. Fraction is the co-creator, so he’s already an obvious choice, while DeConnick is currently working on several popular titles including Pretty Deadly (co-created with Emma Rios), Bitch Planet, and Captain Marvel. Plus, she’s married to Fraction, so she knows the material better than most.

Deadline reports that the duo have signed a two-year deal with Universal TV, which may result in further adaptations from their back catalogues—although they’ll only be able to work on creator-owned titles like Pretty Deadly.
