Scarlett Johansson still wants to make a Black Widow movie, but she admits that she may be running out of time.
In a new interview with Variety, Johansson said that she “often” talks to Marvel Studios about the possibility of a Black Widow solo movie. “I think there’s a lot of opportunity to mine that storyline,” she said, explaining that there’s plenty of material for a Black Widow prequel in Russia, or a continuation of her role after the events of Captain America: Civil War.
“I think if the fans wanted it enough, then it would probably become a reality,” she added.
It’s pretty clear that fans do want it, though. While most Marvel fans were relatively subdued about their enthusiasm for Ant-Man and Doctor Strange before their films’ promotional cycle took hold, we’ve seen years of campaigning for a Black Widow solo movie. Even after Marvel announced its first female-led franchise (Captain Marvel starting in 2019), people continued to campaign for more Black Widow.
Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige has hinted before that a Black Widow movie could be in the works, but the studio has already scheduled a full slate of releases until summer 2019. And despite her enthusiasm for the role, Johansson does have her limits. In the Variety interview, she pointed out that she won’t always want to wear the character’s skin-tight catsuit, saying, “I don’t know how much longer that’s going to be.”
