Can a purple birthday cake smash gender roles?
Absolutely, if it’s a Princess Hulk smash.
Reddit user NobodyLikesASmartAss has only been on the site for two months, but already has a smash hit after sharing the gargantuan Princess Hulk birthday cake made for their twin four-year-old daughters.
“My 4-year old twin girls wanted a Hulk Princess cake for their birthday. So I made one!” NLASA wrote earlier today on r/pics.

The redditor didn’t provide much context for the picture, but Hulk’s triumphant flowing purple evening gown with its floral bodice and embroidered skirt, speaks a thousand words about gender deconstruction.
Also, it looks delicious.
Even better, the cake prompted numerous male redditors to discuss their own turns at breaking down gender, from the user who lamented his father’s refusal to buy him a pink hula hoop when he was five, to the user who offered to buy him one in adulthood to make up for it:
“This makes me sad. My son’s favorite color was pink when he was little. He wanted pink, we got him pink. Neither of us thought it would “change” him. PM me your address, I’ll buy you that pink hula hoop!”
Meanwhile, women on Reddit shared stories of parents who refused to buy them “boy toys” like Tonka trucks, and Lego because they wanted to reinforce gender roles, or keep their daughters from becoming gay.
But our favorite comment comes from redditor octobertwins, who confesses that her daughters are going through something similar:
There must be something about this age that causes weird Mashups. i have 4yo twin girls, too.
One wants to be a ninja princess and the other one wants to be spiderman Elsa.
We can’t think of anything we’d like better than to see Elsa from Frozen as a mask-wearing Marvel superhero. Get on that, Disney!
