Crediting photographers on Pinterest is now simpler and more automatic than ever, an official blog post announced Wednesday.
In May, Pinterest tooks its first step towards resolving the issue by making pins from Flickr, Vimeo, YouTube, and Behance automatically credit their sources. The automaton works even if the pinner finds the image on a third-party site.
Now Pinterest has followed up the feature’s success by expanding it to even more sites. Now pins from 500px, Etsy, Kickstarter, Slideshare, and Soundcloud will also automatically credit their original sources—whether the pinner wants to or not.
Attribution has always been the Achilles’ heel of Pinterest. The inability to quickly and easily give proper credit to intellectual property owners has led to everything from user panic to legal problems for the young startup. Stained glass artist Chantal Paré, in particular, has been vocal about the issue.
Even when pinners wanted to properly credit photos, it was still an ordeal requiring the use of TinEye or Google’s reverse image search.
The issue’s also led to evasive measures from other sites. Rather than rejoice in being Pinterest’s third-largest traffic driver, Flickr allowed users to make their photos off-limits to pinners.
Those measures are no longer necessary, at least when it comes to the sources listed in Pinterest’s two updates.
Wednesday’s update also included a bonus feature: inline play for videos, presentations, and music from Kickstarter, Slideshare, and Soundcloud—allowing pinners to enjoy multiple forms of media without leaving the page.
Now there’s even less reason for pinners to leave the Pinterest than before.
