Peter Capaldi‘s take on the eponymous character in the BBC’s long-running sci-fi romp Doctor Who is undoubtedly the gruffest version of the iconic Gallifreyan since the program’s 2005 reboot, but the actor who plays him is clearly a total sweetheart.
In a video posted to YouTube earlier this week, Ross Goodall shared a personal message sent by Capaldi, in character as The Doctor, to Goodall’s 9-year-old autistic son, Thomas. “This arrived just before Thomas’ nanny’s funeral and helped him to deal with his grief in a profound way,” Goddall wrote in the video’s description. “Thank you Peter so much.”
Looking directly into the camera, Capaldi says:
Thomas, hello. Thank you very much for you letter. I really enjoyed getting it because when Clara and I are traveling around time and space, sometimes bad things happen to us. Sometimes sad things happen to us too. So it’s nice to know there’s somebody like you out there who is on our side. You should know that we are on your side too. So, you look after yourself, take care and be happy.
In a comment left on the video, Goodall expressed his gratitude to Scottish character actor:
