Square Enix’s upcoming action role-playing game Nier: Automata, the hotly anticipated followup to 2010’s Nier, finds the embattled human race using androids to fight a proxy war against machine invaders. Automata’s protagonist, 2B, is one such combat android. And in the recently released demo of the game, you can allegedly see her butthole.

The gratuitous 2B butt shot is the talk of Video Game Twitter this week. Nier: Automata isn’t due out until March, and the controversial anus is the main thing players know about the game so far.
Like it or not, Nier: Automata is now The Butt Game. In accordance with the customs and traditions of the gaming community, commentators have been vigorously debating the merits of the video game butthole.
One thing everyone can agree upon, though, is that the butthole is “lovingly rendered”:
Along with the broad spectrum of hot takes about the android butt, there’s already a bunch of fan art that sexualizes 2B even more explicitly than some of the horny tweets did. I will leave it to you to find it, if you’re into that sort of thing. Just trust me when I say it’s not difficult.
But wait: There’s more to the 2B butt meme than just a simple tale of fanservice and thirsty game fans. There are also 2B butthole truthers who insist that the screenshots featuring the suggestion of an anus are fake and not actually part of the in-game character model. Androids don’t have buttholes!
For better or worse, the butthole is probably fake. But does it matter? If 2B didn’t have a “lovingly rendered butthole,” would it be, from the perspective of her legion of slavering fans, necessary to create one? No, and yes.
Welcome to the future.
Update 12:57pm, Jan. 5: As expected, the butthole screenshot was fake, though we’ve already seen some 2B porn and it’s certainly helped generate some weird buzz for the game.
