Under the Same Stars, the memoir by alleged My Immortal author Rose Christo, has been canceled.
The memoir mostly focused on Christo’s childhood in the New York foster care system, but it also touched upon a legend in Harry Potter fandom: the infamously terrible fanfic My Immortal. Its author remained anonymous for over a decade, but Christo’s book offered a definitive answer. She says she wrote My Immortal as a teenager and has documentation to prove it—later verified by her publisher.
The publisher, St Martin’s Press, has no public comment on why Under the Same Stars was canceled. But according to Christo, it has nothing to do with My Immortal. In a Tumblr post, she says that she “did something pretty stupid” to protect her family when writing about real events.
“I did something pretty stupid during the publication process. I didn’t want my family’s real names getting out, largely because some of the things that happened during childhood were embarrassing. I wanted my brother, my grandparents, and even my parents to have privacy. So when it came time to provide documentation, I altered the photocopies to disguise their names.”
For many fans, this immediately casts doubt on her claim to be the author of My Immortal. So begins another ten years of debate about the internet’s most salacious fanfic mystery.
