Despite warnings from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and international institutions to avoid traveling in order to contain the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the current low cost of flights is tempting many–especially broke millennials.
Currently, the CDC has Italy, Iran, China, South Korea, and Venezuela listed under the Level 3 travel advisory, meaning these countries should be avoided for non-essential travel. A few other countries are listed under Level 2 amid the coronavirus.
Yet, it seems the spread of the virus, which has claimed over 4,000 lives worldwide, hasn’t deterred people from making travel plans—or at least joking about making them.
“Coronavirus is everywhere,” Twitter user @JardinTaylor joked. “Book that flight. Take that trip. You probably won’t die from it, but even if you do… You wanna die with the Eiffel tower in the background, or you wanna die with I-20 in the background? You decide.”
If you’re looking for an identity change and new life, now may be the best time.
“Flights are so cheap right now that it is entirely plausible to fake your death from Corona Virus, hop on a plane to a foreign country, take on a lover and start on a new life,” Twitter user @EwdatsGROSS wrote.
The stereotype of broke millennials with a death wish is also at play in many of these jokes and memes.
“The media is discussing coronavirus in the whole wrong way to millennials,” Twitter user @xanflex wrote. “We love cheap flights AND we wanna die.”
