Metrico, by Dutch studio Digital Dream, is a game that will melt your brain. It’s unlike any other puzzle platformer to date. Every movement you make measures some kind of metric. Running, jumping, and even deaths are all measured, and all help you advance in this purgatory-like world.
Digital Dream showed off the game at the E3 conference in Los Angeles this week.
The puzzles are incredibly clever but never feel out of reach. The reason why the game is so enjoyable is all puzzles involve movement. It’s actively engaging, a contrast to something like Sudoku. It wants you to play around and experiment, to see what the limits of your movements can yield.
The visual style is also striking. Incredibly minimalistic, but underlaid with a score that feels grandiose. Backgrounds are painted with muted colors and geometric shapes in the distance. As synths drone around you, every movement feels significant and part of something larger.
Metrico is slated to launch for the PS Vita handheld system later this year.
