Warner Bros. is considering a reboot of the Matrix franchise, possibly without the Wachowskis involved.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is in the early stages of development for a Matrix relaunch or prequel. Michael B. Jordan is namechecked as a possible star for the new movie. Zak Penn (The Avengers, Pacific Rim: Uprising) is tapped to write the script.
Very little is known about the project, but The Matrix‘s iconic status makes it a difficult choice to reboot—especially if the Wachowskis are not onboard. The two visionary writer/directors worked with Warner Bros. for most of their joint career, but have been focusing on their Netflix series Sense8 since the release of Jupiter Ascending in 2015.
Keanu Reeves said this year that he’d consider returning to the franchise, but only if the Wachowskis had creative control.
