After an impressively well-received first season, Marvel‘s Jessica Jones has been renewed—although it’s unclear when season 2 will appear on Netflix.
As part of Marvel’s Defenders mini-franchise, the second season of Jessica Jones may have to wait until after several other Marvel series have aired. And since these shows are among Netflix‘s most complicated and expensive to film, they can’t release more than two per year.
The second season of Daredevil arrives in March, followed by the debut of Luke Cage. After that, Marvel and Netflix will have to decide whether to prioritize Jessica Jones or continue as planned with Iron Fist and the Defenders team-up in 2017.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos confirmed the renewal news this weekend at a Television Critics Association event. Sarandos also discussed the possibility of other Defenders spinoffs.
There have been several rumors of a Punisher series following Jon Berthal‘s appearance as the character in Daredevil season 2. However, Sarandos said that while characters like the Punisher and Elektra had the potential to lead their own spinoffs, there is “nothing to talk about” specifically. Since Marvel hasn’t even cast Iron Fist yet, this isn’t a huge surprise. If a Punisher spinoff did happen, it would probably be part of a second phase for the Defenders franchise.
While most comic-book movies attract some attention during the casting process, Iron Fist is being watched more closely than most. There is an increasingly vocal fan campaign for Marvel to cast an Asian actor in the lead role, and the pressure will only continue to build if the Punisher gets his own series as well.
