The 35-year-old musician posed for pictures and signed copies of her new book, Violent Bent Backwards Over the Grass, for fans—all while wearing the see-through mask. Once the singer posted content at the event to Instagram, many were quick to call her out for endangering fans and failing to wear a facial covering that does not meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) guidelines for protecting against COVID-19.

“YOU MAKE IT SO HARD TO STAN PLEASEE WEAR A PROPER MASK,” one fan urged to the singer in an Instagram comment that has over 38,000 likes.

“Lana please wear a real mask i’m begging you to be safe,” another commented.

Del Rey was even dubbed “Karen Del Rey” by the popular subreddit dedicated to all things Karen-related, “Fuck You Karen.”

According to CDC guidelines, a protective face covering applies to face coverings made of two or more layers of breathable, washable fabric, created from a material such as cotton.

In typical social media fashion, many also began poking fun at Del Rey for how she’s not just endangering her fans but herself as well.

Some of her fans even seemed disappointed and confused at the Del Rey’s mask choice, yet, they still were determined to meet her at the singing anyway.

Fully mesh masks without a protective layer cannot minimize the risk of spreading the respiratory droplets that can transmit the virus, and it’s encouraged to wear high-thread cotton masks with layers, according to reporting by the Washington Post

Del Rey has yet to respond directly to any of the criticism, and the video of her meeting fans in the mesh face covering still remains on her Instagram account.

The singer did, however, upload a video to her social media two days later that showed her wearing an animal print mask that fully covers her mouth and nose. Fans quickly flooded the comment section of the latest video with praise and relief that the singer was wearing what seemed to be a proper face covering.

“Yes lana. That’s a proper and REAL mask…wear these instead of that mesh shit u [sic] wore,” one user commented.
