Did you know there’s a Kingsman prequel on the way? Confusingly titled The King’s Man, the new film takes a similar idea to the original—a young English action hero training to join a secret spy agency—and sets the story in the 1900s.
The trailer introduces English actor Harris Dickinson as the new Kingsman recruit and shows Ralph Fiennes playing his mentor. Matthew Vaughn returned to direct, and the film appears to lean into the stylish action tone of the first two movies. But the main draw—though it’s not fully clear from the trailer—is the cast list.
You probably noticed Rhys Ifans playing a characteristically melodramatic version of Rasputin, but unless you Google the full cast, you might not realize this film is packed with other famous historical figures. Fiennes is playing T.E. Lawrence (aka Lawrence of Arabia), Gemma Arterton is the legendary spy/exotic dancer Mata Hari, Tom Hollander plays three different European monarchs, and Charles Dance plays the British WWI commander Field Marshal Haig. And there are plenty other WWI-era figures in there.
The King’s Man is reportedly an origin story for the Kingsman organization and will debut in February 2020.
