Alias Investigations will soon be open again for business, thanks to Jessica Jones season 2.
In the midst of the superhero television boom, Netflix’s Jessica Jones made waves in its debut in November 2015. It offered nuanced storytelling and a subversion of the noir genre all while showcasing a complex female superhero to root for. It not only won over fans but critics as well. Jessica Jones nabbed a Peabody Award last year, with the board praising how the show “asks unpopular questions about power and consent, while constructing vivid and compelling characters.” And now we’ll be visiting her corner of Hell’s Kitchen once again with the show’s renewal.
We saw Jessica Jones in The Defenders, working alongside with Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Now here’s what to expect when she makes her solo return.
Jessica Jones season 2 cast
Krysten Ritter, whose portrayal of Jessica Jones garnered praise from reviewers, will be reprising her role as the former superhero turned private detective. Also joining her is Rachael Taylor as Trish Walker, Jessica’s friend who is coping with her own traumas and aided Jessica in taking down Kilgrave (David Tennant) last season. Their bond is something showrunner Melissa Rosenberg wants to explore more in the upcoming season.
“That is the core relationship in the piece. It is about female friendship, it is about how friends evolve—they’re sisters, really—and it’s about how they evolve and ping off each other,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I’m interested in relationships, whether they be romantic, or family, or friends, or professional—that’s what’s interesting to me, is Jessica in relationship to people.”
Oscar-nominated actress Janet McTeer is the first new cast member announced to join Jessica Jones. While information on her role is being kept under wraps, Entertainment Weekly described it as an “undisclosed character who will have an enormous impact on Jessica’s life.”
While none of the other Defenders—or other non-superhero characters like Claire Temple, Misty Knight, or Colleen Wing—are confirmed to appear in Jessica Jones yet, they all exist within the same universe, so it’s always possible they could, pending any developments from the other Netflix shows. Carrie-Anne Moss’s Geryn Hogarth first showed up in Jessica Jones, but she has also appeared in Daredevil, Iron Fist, and The Defenders, which makes her return to Jessica Jones likely.
Although Jessica Jones killed Kilgrave at the end of season 1, Tennant is confirmed to return as the character, who’s still very much a presence in Jessica’s mind.
“He’s such a part of her construction and her dilemma,” Rosenberg told Entertainment Weekly in December 2017. “I think just having him come back and be that mirror again is really important.”

Jessica Jones season 2 plot and villains
Little is known about the plot of Jessica Jones’s second season, but it will likely follow Jessica after the events of The Defenders and include nods to other Marvel series.
For one, Jessica will probably have to deal with the aftermath of killing Kilgrave.
“We leave Jessica in a very confused place. Her reason for getting up in the morning was her nemesis, this awful villain and her abuser—and she kills him,” Ritter explained. “And Jessica is not a murderer and she did that, so I think that’s gonna come with a lot of emotional weight and baggage that we’ll see how she deals with it.”
In the same Entertainment Weekly interview, Rosenberg hinted at multiple antagonists for Jessica to face off against in season 2.
“No one is ever going to beat David Tennant as Kilgrave, so you don’t do that,” Rosenberg said. “The biggest mistake would be to try to repeat that. You just go, “OK, we’re not doing that, so we have this open to us.”
Jessica Jones could take cues from Alias, the comic book that serves as the basis for the series. While her history and face-off with Kilgrave is taken from Alias’ final volume, it’s far from the only story contained.
The official synopsis for Jessica Jones season 2 clarified a view details, via Digital Spy:
New York City private investigator Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) is beginning to put her life back together after murdering her tormenter, Kilgrave.
“Now known throughout the city as a super-powered killer, a new case makes her reluctantly confront who she really is while digging deeper into her past to explore the reasons why.
“I think Jessica is in a pretty dark headspace when we meet her at the top of season 2,” Ritter said. “The Defenders took place over the course of, like, a minute—well, it was a week long—so that was like a blip in time, and we didn’t focus too much on it.”
And Rosenberg hints that season 2 probably won’t be as closely tied to the Jessica Jones comics as the previous season was.
“I will always use as much as I can from the books, but unfortunately we’ve gone away from that mythology,” Rosenberg told Digital Spy. “The MCU is very different, and we’re probably not going to be able to do parallel storylines. But I take every little piece I can [from the comics], because it’s so good.”
It’s also starting to shape up behind the scenes. Raelle Tucker is joining the show as a writer and producer and last October, Rosenberg announced that all 13 episodes of season 2 will be directed by women. The move would make it one of the few one-hour dramas with all-female direction, another being Ava DuVernay’s Queen Sugar.

Netflix released several new photos with the second trailer, which showcase Trish Walker and Jeryn Hogarth, Jessica’s neighbor, her neighbor Malcolm, and Kilgrave, who will still make an appearance after his death at the end of season 1.
New key art embraces the show’s tone and shows Jessica Jones in a bathroom with the tagline, “Fight like a woman” graffitied onto a stall.
Jessica Jones season 2 trailer
Netflix released the first trailer for Jessica Jones season 2 on Dec. 9. With the backdrop of Heart’s “Barracuda,” the trailer teases multiple fight scenes, Jessica Jones’ staple dry wit (including a knock on another hero’s famous words to live by), and the search into her own past.

The first proper trailer ends any concerns about whether the show can thrive without Killgrave. Sure, he’s there for a brief cameo. But for the most part, this season delves into Jessica’s earlier backstory. With Killgrave dead, she has more time to focus on her family’s death and the mysterious experiments that gave her superpowers as a teen. It’s an intense and gritty trailer, showing glimpses of a massacre, a new private detective rival for Alias Investigations, and a new love interest for Jessica’s lawyer, Jeri Hogarth.

The latest Jessica Jones trailer heavily features footage from its first season, but it also includes a couple of new scenes, including an extended look at Jessica in anger management and more of Jessica’s private detective work.
As for how she deals with threats? “I always deal with threats head on,” she says. “Meaning I punch them in the head until they’re unconscious.”
