Adding to its growing slate of Marvel and Disney+ collaborations, a Hawkeye series starring Jeremy Renner—who will also introduce a beloved character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe—is now being developed.
Although Renner’s Hawkeye (whose name appears in initial headlines) is the familiar draw for MCU fans, it’s evident from what little we know about the Hawkeye series that it’s not just his show. According to Variety, the limited series will be “an adventure series in which Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, will pass the torch to Kate Bishop.”
What’s on Disney+? Here’s everything we know:
Kate Bishop, who’s been a character in Marvel Comics since 2005, took up the moniker Hawkeye after Clint Barton’s death in the comics. Clint later came back to life and, for a time, operated under the name Ronin, but he allowed Kate Bishop to keep the name. In many of their interactions, Clint plays a mentor role for Kate’s Hawkeye. Their most well-known team-up is the critically acclaimed Hawkeye run by Matt Fraction and David Aja, which also includes a Very Good Dog.
Fans have speculated about Kate’s entrance to the MCU for years, most recently with an Avengers: Endgame trailer that includes a clip of Clint teaching a young woman to shoot with a bow and arrow. It’s unclear whether that young woman is Kate herself or an aged version of Clint’s daughter Lila, but either could work. If it’s Kate, many more MCU fans will be introduced to the character before the show begins; if it’s the latter, we still have a major casting announcement to look forward to. (Either way, it didn’t look good.)
Introducing Kate Bishop to the MCU can accomplish two things. One, assuming this series takes place after Endgame (and reveals that Clint Barton survives the film), this would be a way for Renner to bow out while giving fans a worthy successor. And two, Kate’s comics introduction as a member of the Young Avengers opens up the possibility of an entirely new team of superheroes joining the MCU.
Information is scarce beyond the initial announcement, but we may learn more details about a Hawkeye series—not to mention the series starring Loki, Scarlet Witch and Vision, and Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson—during Disney’s Investor Day on Thursday.
