The hero of Star Trek: The Next Generation and the villain of the original Star Wars trilogy have some excellent points to make, as they attack each other’s media franchises.
Debates about the superiority of Star Trek over Star Wars, or vice versa, are as old as the dawn of nerd culture, sprinkled with brief pauses as both sides agree to gang up on anyone who confuses the most important science fiction universes in Geekdom. Very often the debate is couched as a way to determine which franchise is nerdier, which makes no sense as you’d think “nerdier” would also mean “better” when it comes to geek culture.
College Humor nails the high points of the ongoing rhetorical clash between Star Trek and Star Wars fans, voiced through Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the most infamous Dark Lord of the Sith, respectively. College Humor also comes dangerously close to taking a stand on the issue, at the end of the animated discussion.
If the Enterprise blows up the Death Star, does that mean Star Trek is nerdier and therefore better because Captain Picard was smarter than Darth Vader, or does it mean that because Captain Picard displayed superior nerd skills, Star Trek is therefore nerdier, and hence worse than Star Wars? The geek debate continues.
