New details about a 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' reboot could appease fans who were upset with the original announcement.

When news broke last week that a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was in the works, all hell broke loose. But an announcement from the reboot’s showrunner may placate fans who feel protective of the original series and its canon.

Monica Owusu-Breen, who’s helming the script, tweeted on Thursday that “there is only one Buffy,” reassuring fans that the show would not be attempting to recast as the titular character from Joss Whedon’s original series. Based on initial reports, fans believed a woman of color would be cast as Buffy 2.0.

But Owusu indicated new actors wouldn’t be shoehorned into pre-existing character roles, writing that “they can’t be replaced.”

“But here we are, twenty years later…” she wrote. “And the world seems a lot scarier. So maybe, it would be time to meet a new Slayer…”

It appears that instead, as many fans had hoped, the reboot will exist in the same universe as the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer but with new characters and new storylines. There are no casting updates, but the original plan to hire an African-American woman in the new slayer role appears to remain.

Whedon will resume his role of showrunner for the Fox 21 TV Studios series with Gail Berman, Fran Kazui and Kaz Kazui as executive producers.
