The trailer for 'Batman Ninja' looks incredible.

We’ve seen plenty of takes on Batman in comics, live-action and animated movies and TV shows, and video games over the years, but our first look at an upcoming Batman anime film introduces us to a completely new take on the superhero.

First announced in October, Batman Ninja (literally) transports Batman, the Joker, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and even Alfred from the city of Gotham to Japan during the Middle Ages. Batman is missing all of his high-tech weapons, but he trains his mind to take on a powerful Joker, who now claims he’s the most powerful figure in Japan.

The visuals on their own are enough to draw in even casual Batman fans, but the subtitles reveal a much different—but equally intriguing—story about the Dark Knight.

Batman Ninja will be released on DVD and Blu-ray in 2018.

Update Feb. 14, 2018, 10:50am CT: There’s now an English version of the trailer. While it doesn’t add a ton to the Japanese original, we can confirm Batman Ninja still looks awesome.
