Babymetal, the Japanese teen metal band that’s changing everything we think we know about the genre, has already performed in front of thousands of fans and turned a few heads amid a wave of complaints from other metal fans. But now they’re going to take over a new realm: animation.

Warner Bros.’ digital studio Blue Ribbon Content is teaming up with Amuse USA, a subsidiary of Japanese studio Amuse Inc. to create a new hybrid live-action and animated webseries about Babymetal.

“Babymetal have to be seen to be believed—a mind-blowing, fun combination of pop vocals, heavy metal music and dance choreography brought to life by three incredibly talented teenage stars,” Sam Register, President, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Digital Series, said in a press release. “We are huge fans here at Blue Ribbon Content and are extremely excited to help bring the Babymetal phenomenon to U.S. audiences through this upcoming digital series.”

In the webseries, Babymetal is formed by the god Kitsune after the world of heavy metal faces attack. The band’s three members, Yuimetal, Su-Metal, and Moametal star as themselves and will travel between realms (live-action and animation) through a secret portal. They team up together to save the day, but also to rock and redefine what metal is. Naturally, the show will feature a live performance or two.

While Babymetal has already made waves with music fans abroad, the webseries is another way to introduce the band to an even bigger audience.

And redefining the genre? Webseries or not, they’ve already started to accomplish that mission on this side of reality.
