An Apocalypse Now video game is coming in 2020, provided enough fans donate to the recently launched Kickstarter campaign. Acclaimed director Francis Ford Coppola even signed off on the project, which involves a number of notable game developers.
Talent involved in the project includes writers from the Fallout and PlanetSide series, as well as Star Wars Galaxies. A prototype teaser is on the way for fans and backers, but the project is currently billed as an “immersive, psychedelic horror RPG.” Concept art is viewable on the project’s page, as is a video message from Coppola.
Due to the game’s “daring and intense” demands, the creators are seeking funding outside of traditional game publishing, and letting fans decide if this game is something that needs to exist. The funding goal for the project is set at $900,000 with over $11,000 pledged at the time of writing. A donation of $25 will net players a digital copy of the game when it is finished, and higher tiers can get access to earlier builds and a physical copy of the game. Apocalypse Now: The Game is only planned for PC at the moment, but will come to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One if fans raise $2,500,000.
Kickstarter campaigns, particularly for video games, are often risky ventures that may or may not live up to their promises. While the talent behind this project is undeniable, the goals are especially lofty for a game.
