Animal Crossing Christmas

Heads up, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp players: Nintendo is rolling out the game’s first temporary event. Like the events in previous Animal Crossing games, this one’s based on real-life holidays. To that effect, the event gives players a limited time to acquire special Yuletide furnishings in the game. So while some players are creating Animal Crossing prison camps, you can put on a Santa hat and deck the halls.

Candy canes are the Holiday Event’s special currency. You earn them simply by completing requests. And while every player gets a Santa hat just for logging on between now and 12:59am Dec. 26, you’ll need to spend candy canes to buy the rest of the items.

What kind of items are we talking about? You can acquire things like Christmas trees and wreaths, stringed lights and holiday cakes, red-and-white bedspreads and rugs. Decorate your yard with a snowman if you want, and dress your character in a holiday sweater.

These items are only available for a limited time. When Nintendo pulls the plug on the Holiday Event, you won’t be able to get them, unless they bring them back next year. So if your campground could use a little holiday cheer, hop in and start earning those candy canes.

Nintendo has had its ups and downs with its mobile offerings so far. Miitomo sputtered out quickly, and Super Mario Run didn’t live up to Nintendo’s expectations, despite being downloaded some 200 million times. Meanwhile, Fire Emblem Heroes is raking in money, despite significantly fewer downloads.

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is faring well so far, with 15 million downloads in its first six days. If Nintendo plays its cards right, seasonal events like this should keep players coming back year-round to get unique items.
